They've been developing something called NEO NPCs, characters built on generative AI that can hold unscripted conversations, remember previous interactions, and respond with what feels like genuine emotion. The demo featured two characters, Bloom and Iron, each with distinct personalities and conversational styles that adapted based on how players interacted with them.
What makes this different from the chatbot experiments gaming tried before is the depth. These characters have backstories, motivations, and emotional models. They don't just respond to what you say. They respond based on who they think you are from everything you've done in the game so far.
What Players Actually Experience
KRAFTON already shipped a version of this in PUBG, of all places. They added a voice controlled AI teammate using NVIDIA ACE technology. You can actually talk to your squad mate, coordinate strategies, and get contextual responses during matches. It's not perfect, but it works well enough that people use it.
The more ambitious implementations are coming from RPG and adventure game studios. Imagine walking into a tavern where every character has their own life, their own problems, their own opinions about you based on your reputation. Ask the bartender about rumors, and she might reference something you did in a completely different part of the map three days ago. Try to lie to someone, and they might call you out because their friend already told them the truth.
This isn't theoretical. It's being demonstrated in playable form at every major gaming conference this year.
The Concerns That Keep Coming Up
Not everyone is excited about this, and honestly, some of the pushback is valid.
Privacy is the big one. AI NPCs that remember everything about your playstyle also mean the game is collecting and processing a lot of data about how you behave. What you say, how you react to moral choices, even your emotional responses to story beats. Game companies having access to that kind of behavioral data raises real questions about how it gets used beyond making better NPCs.
There's also the creative authorship question. When an NPC improvises dialogue, who wrote it? The developers who created the character's personality framework? The AI model generating the words? The player whose actions prompted the response? This matters for voice actors, writers, and everyone in game development whose craft involves creating these characters by hand.
And the cost is significant. Running real time AI language models for every NPC in an open world game requires serious compute. That either means cloud processing (adding latency and internet requirements) or very powerful local hardware. Neither option is perfect for mainstream gaming yet.
Where This Goes Next
The studios investing in AI NPCs aren't doing it for a single game. They're building platforms. Inworld AI provides the character engine that multiple developers can use across different titles. NVIDIA ACE offers the audio and animation layer. The pieces are coming together for a future where hand scripted NPC dialogue feels as dated as sprite based graphics.
Whether that future arrives in two years or five depends on how quickly the technology gets cheaper and more efficient. But after seeing what's possible right now, there's no going back to NPCs who say "I used to be an adventurer like you" on an endless loop. The characters are waking up. And gaming will never be the same.
