I split tested AI generated subject lines against my own writing for three months across 47 email campaigns.

The results weren't what I expected. Neither approach won consistently. They each had different strengths.

Personalization at scale. AI easily incorporated name, location, past purchase data into subject lines. Tedious to do manually for thousands of variations.

Where Human Subject Lines Won

Complex products that needed nuanced positioning. AI didn't understand subtle messaging.

Brand voice consistency. My writing naturally matched our brand. AI needed heavy editing to sound like us.

Subject lines requiring judgment calls about what to emphasize. AI picked statistically popular words, not strategically smart ones.

Emotional connection. When I wrote from genuine enthusiasm about a product, it showed. AI enthusiasm felt manufactured.

The Combination Approach

Best results came from using both. AI generates options, I edit the best one to add brand voice.

What AI Gets Wrong

Context about why this email matters. AI knows email marketing formulas but not my specific business situation.

Audience fatigue. AI suggested the same high performing patterns repeatedly. Worked great initially, wore thin after a few campaigns.

Clever wordplay or puns. AI tries but usually produces groan worthy results instead of genuinely witty ones.

Knowing when to break rules. Sometimes a boring straightforward subject line is exactly right. AI always tries to optimize which isn't always appropriate.

What Humans Get Wrong

Overthinking simple promotional emails. I'd spend 15 minutes crafting the perfect subject line for "20% Off Sale." AI nailed it in seconds.

Inconsistent performance. My subject lines varied wildly in quality. AI was boringly consistent.

Personal bias about what sounds good. I'd write subject lines I liked that audiences didn't respond to. AI didn't have that problem.

Time investment. Writing subject lines from scratch is slow. AI speeds this up dramatically.

Different Email Types Need Different Approaches

Newsletters: Human written performed 19% better. Needed authentic voice and relationship building.

What Actually Works

Use human writing for relationship emails where authenticity matters. Welcome series, newsletters, personal updates.

Use hybrid for everything else. AI generates the structure, human adds personality.

Track both open rates and click rates. High opens mean nothing if engagement sucks.

The Time Savings Reality

AI cut my subject line writing time from about 2 hours per week to 20 minutes.

That time savings is worth a lot even if performance was identical. But performance actually improved in some categories.

For a solo marketer or small team, AI subject line tools are no brainer time savers.

The Unsubscribe Rate Surprise

I worried AI subject lines might increase unsubscribes by being too aggressive or salesy.

Unsubscribe rates were actually slightly lower with AI subject lines. About 0.02% lower, barely significant but interesting.

My theory is AI was more consistent and professional. My bad human written subject lines sometimes annoyed people enough to unsub.

What I Do Now

Content emails get human written subject lines. Worth the time investment for authenticity.

Important launches get hybrid. AI gives me 10 options, I heavily edit my favorite into final version.

I still A/B test everything because results vary by audience and campaign.

After three months of testing, I'm convinced the future is hybrid. AI handles the boring optimization stuff, humans add judgment and personality.

Pure AI is good. Pure human is good. Together they're better than either alone.

The specific numbers I got won't match yours. Your audience, products, brand voice, and email frequency are different.

But the pattern probably holds. Test both approaches, measure what works for your specific situation, use the best tool for each job.
